What Respite Care Actually Looks Like for a Busy Gilbert Family
It often starts with a simple favor.
“Can you stop by Mom’s on your way home?”
Then it becomes picking up groceries, checking medications, driving to appointments, making dinner and calling before bed to make sure everything is okay.
For many families caring for an aging parent, caregiving doesn’t arrive with an official starting date. It simply becomes part of everyday life often alongside work, children, relationships and everything else already on the calendar.
That’s where respite care can help.
What Is Respite Care?
Respite care is temporary support for an older adult that gives a family caregiver time away from their caregiving responsibilities.
But “respite” doesn’t have to mean taking a vacation or being away for several days.
For a busy Gilbert family, it might look like having a caregiver spend time with Dad while his daughter goes to her own doctor’s appointment. It could mean someone helping Mom with lunch and companionship while her son attends his child’s school event.
It might simply give a spouse a few uninterrupted hours to run errands, meet a friend or rest.
Respite care isn't about replacing the family caregiver. It's about supporting them.
You Don't Have to Wait Until You're Exhausted
Families sometimes think respite care is something to consider only when caregiving has become overwhelming.
It can actually be helpful much earlier.
A little support can give family caregivers room to continue being a daughter, son or spouse not only the person responsible for getting everything done.
It can also provide an opportunity for an older adult to become comfortable receiving help from someone outside the family before more assistance is needed.
Respite Care Should Fit the Family
Every family's situation is different.
One parent may benefit from companionship and meal preparation while their family caregiver is at work. Another may need help with personal care and daily routines. Someone living with dementia or Parkinson's may benefit from a caregiver who understands the unique challenges associated with those conditions.
The important question isn't simply, “How many hours of care do we need?”
It's:
“Where would a little support make the biggest difference for our family?”
At Senior Helpers of Chandler-Gilbert, we don't have hourly minimums, which gives families flexibility to create support around what their loved one actually needs.
Sometimes a few hours in the right place can make the week feel much more manageable.
Caring for Yourself Is Part of the Care Plan
When someone you love needs help, it can be easy to put your own needs at the bottom of the list.
But family caregivers need support, too.
Respite care can provide something very simple but incredibly valuable: time.
Time to work. Time with your children. Time with your spouse. Time to take care of your own health. Or time to simply be yourself for a little while.
If you're caring for an aging loved one in Gilbert and wondering whether a little extra help could make life easier for everyone, Senior Helpers of Gilbert & Chandler would be happy to talk with you.
