San Tan Charter School’s Varsity Boys Basketball Team Makes History

San Tan Charter School’s Varsity Boys Basketball Team Makes History By Being the First 2A School to Win the Copper State Championship

The Number One Ranked San Tan Boys Basketball Team Beat Second Ranked Valley Christian 53-43 to Win the Title

On Saturday, February 28, the number one ranked varsity boys basketball team from San Tan Charter School defeated second ranked Valley Christian to win the Copper State Championship.

As Coach Kyli Crooms noted, San Tan Charter School is the first 2A school to ever win the Copper State Championship.

“It was a hard fought game, and our guys stayed focused throughout to win the game by a score of 53 to 43,” Crooms said, adding that the team finished the season with an impressive record of 24 wins and 3 losses.

“I am beyond proud of my guys and how hard they have worked all season long.”

As Athletic Director Kristofer Sippel Jr. noted, the historic win capped off an incredible record-breaking season for the varsity basketball team.

For instance, on January 30, the San Tan team scored 145 points during a game versus Miami High School, which was the second most points scored by a varsity high school basketball game in Arizona’s history.

Crooms credits the commitment of the 15 San Tan students who make up the varsity basketball team for winning the historic title.

“Last year, we weren’t always playing as one team, which got the best of us in the playoffs. This season, many of our upper classmen have been leading by example and taking charge. As a result, the team is not only playing better team basketball; the guys truly love and care for each other.”

Sippel is also extremely proud of the way every player on the team stuck together and supported one another, both during practices and games.

“In a long season there are a lot of ups and downs, but the group led by the coaches have stayed together and they continued to improve each week. They have played their best basketball at the right time,” Sippel said.
