Gilbert, AZ (August 20, 2024) – HD SOUTH, Home of the Gilbert Historical Museum, is the East Valley’s arts, culture, & history center and offers a series of exciting and informative programs for people of all ages. October Events
ONE OF A KIND GILBERT
Did you know that Gilbert had its own “Gilbertopoly” board game?  Or that movie tickets for the Valley Theater in the Heritage District were only 26 cents in 1936?  Curious what some early Gilbert businesses creatively used for their marketing?  Then you won’t want to miss your chance to see this temporary exhibit of “only in Gilbert” items!  On display now through December 2nd.  Exhibit admission is included in the price of museum admission.
NO STRANGERS EXHIBIT—GALLERY 4
The annual No Strangers exhibition once again celebrates the diverse range of artwork created by members of Art Intersection.  This exhibit showcases the creative energy from the vision and talent of Art Intersection members and will run from now until November 2, 2024.  Gallery 4 admission is included in the price of museum admission. 
HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
On display from September 15-October 15, stories and pictures of Hispanic families who were instrumental in the settling and progress of Gilbert.  In this exhibit you’ll have the opportunity to read about early life for Hispanic settlers, including recollections surrounding hard work, family times, and community.  Don’t miss your chance to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and learn a little more about the people who helped shape Gilbert.  Exhibit admission is included in the price of museum admission.
11th ANNUAL GVAL MEMBER SHOW
On exhibit throughout the museum from October 1-November 23, artwork created by members of the acclaimed Gilbert Visual Art League.  This showcase of gorgeous pieces highlights an assortment of mediums such as acrylic, pencil, oil, mixed media, and much more.  There are nearly 100 pieces on display, some are for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting HD SOUTH!  Member show admission is included in the price of museum admission.  For more information visit www.gval.org.

KID’S COOKIE DECORATING
October 1, 2024 | 10:00am – 11:30am or 12:30pm – 2:00pm   Kids will have fun as they learn a variety of cookie decorating techniques including how to hold the icing bags, outlining, flooding, wet on wet techniques, and more! Cookie sets are designed by 6B’s Teaching Partners and taught by Vickie from Mae’s Cookie Jar. All supplies and a take-home box are provided. Ages 5 and up. Parents must accompany their children. ADULT AUTHOR VISIT AND BOOK READING
October 10, 2024 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm   Welcome Whitney Award Winning author Tyson Abaroa as he reads from his book, The Cost of Secrets. The author will also share his experiences and what it takes to connect to creativity to write a book.  Tyson Abaroa has written two books with plans to write a third!  Come meet the author and hear more about this story, The Cost Of Secrets, set in the Phoenix area.  Ages 16+ Registration is required. THE HORSE--A NOBLE STEED
October 12, 2024 | 12:00pm – 1:30pm   Brandy Alaux of Serenity Stables, and her equestrian students will share their experience and appreciation of this unique animal that has contributed so much to the human experience. Horses have worked hard and added greatly to the support and well-being of farmers and ranchers throughout history. Participants will learn about some of the little-known roles the horse has played throughout history, and about rescue horses and their unique role in today’s culture. Registration is required. FAMILY HISTORY – FAVORITE MEMORIES ABOUT SCHOOL DAYS   
October 15, 2024 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm   Join ASU professor emeritus Duane Roen, co-founding coordinator for the Project for Writing and Recording Family History in the College of Integrative Science and Arts, for this unique family history workshop. Some of us have best friends that we have known for decades. Some of us have had a series of best friends over the years, and some of us have added best friends along the way. We will begin with talking about our best friends and then we will write about one best friend.  Registration is required. Cost: FREE
STEM SATURDAY
October 19, 2024 | 10:30am – 12:00pm   Retired local teacher, Erik Gillman, will guide participants in creating their own wood art project using computer numerical control. Kids will learn how to combine art and technology using a laser engraver.  Whatever design you can draw (or import from the Internet), can be engraved into wood.  Participants will create a design on a Chromebook using EASEL software and convert the design into GCODE, then set up the engraver to start the process.  Ages 12 and up. Supplies are provided. Class size limited. Registration is required. Cost: FREE  *program registration will close at 12:00pm on Friday October 18th
ADVENTURES IN ART WITH GVAL
October 19, 2024 | 1:00pm – 3:00pm  Join HD SOUTH and Pam Hendricks, a member of the Gilbert Visual Art League (GVAL) for this fun and interactive art workshop.  Pam will teach participants new artistic techniques to create a unique piece of art.  All supplies are provided. Registration is required. Space is limited. See the calendar for this month’s art project. Cost: members: FREE; non-members $5. *program registration will close at 12:00pm on Friday, October 18th
SOUND MEDITATION                                                                                                                                      October 22, 2024 | 6:30pm-7:30pm   Meditation can provide relief from the intrusive thoughts of grief. It can also help your nervous system learn to heal with your grief. Join Stuart Preston, certified Sound Practitioner, in a sound “healing” session designed specifically for those grieving a loss.  Participants must bring a yoga mat, 1-2 blankets and a pillow. PARTY IN THE STARS
October 23, 2024 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm  The East Valley Astronomy Club (EVAC) is a group of more than 100 astronomy enthusiasts which began in 1987 and includes members from all over the Valley. Join EVAC and HD SOUTH for a Star Party where attendees will learn about the cosmos and be able to view celestial bodies in our galaxy! This event will take place at the observatory at the Riparian Preserve. Space is limited. Registration is required. Cost: FREE.   ~donations for EVAC will be accepted at the observatory~
ROSES IN THE DESERT-HASSLE FREE ROSE GARDENING
October 24, 2024 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm   Welcome back Steve Sheard, Master Consulting Rosarian with the American Rose Society and Chairperson for the Mesa Community College Rose Garden. Steve will share information and insight into the types of roses that do well in the desert, selecting where to grow roses, planting bare root or potted roses, watering, fertilizing and more. Join HD SOUTH for this program and learn how to grow hassle free roses. Registration is required. Cost: FREE                                                           
 
 
PERCUSSION INSTRUMENT MAKE AND PLAY                                                                                                               October 26, 2024 | 10:30am – 12:00pm   Play musical instruments from around the world with ASU Professors Emeritus Duane and Maureen Roen, in this fun and interactive musical workshop. Learn how to make and play simple percussion instrument from items found around the home. The workshop will end with a brief concert performance alongside Duane and Maureen. Supplies provided. Ages 6 & up. Registration required. Cost: FREE.

October 26, 2024 | 2:00pm – 4:00pm   Whether you come on your own or with friends, you will have a great time decorating gorgeous, themed cookie sets. GHOSTS OF THE MUSEUM TOUR
October 26, 2024 | 7:00pm—9:00pm Just in time for Halloween, join HD SOUTH and the Phoenix Arizona Paranormal Society for a special Ghosts of the Museum paranormal investigation and tour.  Learn about the spirits who visit the oldest building still standing in Gilbert.  Dress comfortably, closed-toe shoes are a must.  Registration and pre-payment are required.  *please note, some rooms on the tour are accessible only by stairs
S.T.E.A.M. & LEONARDO DA VINCI
October 29, 2024 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm   Join Jerry Balistreri as he presents a dynamic story of the life of Leonardo da Vinci in full regalia and Italian accent. Da Vinci was a polymath that understood the world was not separated into various subjects, but rather a blend of art, science, math, nature and technology. Da Vinci became one of the world’s greatest artists and inventors using the disciplines of science, mechanics, art, nature ,and space.  This fascinating presentation includes invention models that are sure to inspire STEAM enthusiasts.
