March Events
20TH ANNUAL ART OF QUILTING QUILT SHOW
HD SOUTH, Home of the Gilbert Historical Museum, invites you to the 20th Annual “Art of Quilting” Show with a special theme of “Then and Now”.  The “Art of Quilting” show will run from February 25 to May 26, 2025.  Show admission is included in the price of museum admission. 
GILBERT SPORTS
Sports have a remarkable ability to bring people together. Whether we're cheering for our favorite teams, participating in community leagues, or watching international competitions, sports help us forge strong relationships and foster a sense of unity. From February 11-April 21, we will showcase some of Gilbert's sports history, including Gilbert’s 1923 basketball team the Yellowjackets, and the 1927 Gilbert High School basketball team that traveled all the way to Chicago to compete in the Interscholastic Basketball Tournament! 
22nd ANNUAL GVAL JURIED ART SHOW AND SALE
HD SOUTH invites you to the 22nd Annual GVAL Juried Art Show and Sale.  Art for the show is selected by a professional juror and the show judge selects the winners and Best In Show.  A selection of submitted pieces will be available for viewing in Gallery 4.  All pieces can be viewed online at www.gval.org .  The show will include over 80 pieces of assorted works-- painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture.  The show opens March 29 and runs until May 3, 2025.  HD SOUTH partners with GVAL, which is a non-profit group that offers a venue for local artists to show their work.  Admission to Gallery 4 is included in the price of museum admission.

WOMEN IN HISTORY
March 8, 2025 | 10:30am – 12:00pm   Join HD SOUTH volunteer Karen Harper, a historian and history professor at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, as she shares her knowledge and love of history with our community. Using diaries, images, and various primary sources, Karen will bring to life the experiences of women who helped settle Gilbert, Arizona. Come and hear about the unique adventures of wives, women ranchers, homesteaders, and merchants, and discover what their unique impact was on Gilbert’s history! Registration is required. Cost: FREE
COOKIE DECORATING WITH MAE’S COOKIE JAR
March 8, 2025 | 1:00pm – 3:00pm   Whether you come on your own or with friends, you will have a great time decorating gorgeous, themed cookie sets. Guided by the talented Vickie from Mae’s Cookie Jar, participants will learn a variety of cookie decorating techniques.  Cookie sets are designed by 6B’s Teaching Partners and taught by Vickie. BOY OUTTA THE BUSH-CHANGING LANES
March 11, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm   Find your passion…Empower Your Community…Make Someone’s Day!  Welcome back Peter Schuman for an hour and a half of humor, inspiration, and adventure. Early in life Peter realized the world was full of fascination, opportunities, adventures, and experiences he would recall as “SURVIVAL” skills that would set the foundation for who he is today. Learn how Peter has made a positive impact in his community. Registration is required. Cost: FREE
PAINT AND SIP
March 13, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm   Join acclaimed local artist Jean Smith, for a paint and sip night at the museum. Bring a friend and your favorite beverage and enjoy an evening of painting. During this workshop, participants will be instructed on varying artistic techniques to make their own personal art projects. Be sure to bring your special someone for an evening of painting and fun. All Supplies are provided. Registration is required. Cost: Members FREE; Non-members $5.
ADVENTURES IN ART WITH GVAL                                                                                                        March 15, 2025 | 10:00am – 12:00pm   Join HD SOUTH and the Gilbert Visual Arts League for this fun and interactive art workshop. Pam Hendricks, a member of the Gilbert Visual Arts League (GVAL) will lead participants through a workshop teaching new artistic techniques. All supplies provided. Registration is required. LIFE LESSONS LEARNED FROM FAMILY & FRIENDS
March 18, 2025 | 6:30 – 8:00pm   Join ASU professor emeritus Duane Roen, founding coordinator for the Project for Writing and Recording Family History in the College of Integrative Science and Arts, for a unique family history workshop. Sometimes family members teach us lessons about life by talking with or to us. At other times, though, family members and friends teach us about life simply by the ways that they live their lives. In this workshop, we will discuss some of the ways that family members and friends have taught us about life, then we will write about one lesson learned. Registration required. Cost: FREE
PARTY IN THE STARS
March 19, 2025 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm   The East Valley Astronomy Club (EVAC) is a group of more than 100 astronomy enthusiasts which began in 1987 and includes members from all over the Valley. Join EVAC and HD SOUTH for a Star Party where attendees will learn about the cosmos and be able to view celestial bodies in our galaxy! This event takes place at the Observatory at the Riparian Preserve. Registration is required. Cost: FREE    ~donations for EVAC are accepted at the observatory~
LUNCH HOUR BOOK CLUB
March 24 & 31, 2025 | 11:30am – 1:00pm Bring your lunch and join HD SOUTH and Literally, A Bookshop, who have partnered to host a community book club. The Book Club will meet twice a month, and the book selection will be discussed over the course of the two sessions. The March book selection is “You Only Call When You’re In Trouble: A Novel” written by Stephen McCauley.  McCauley’s rollicking and touching novel asks an increasingly important question: Is it ever okay to stop caring for others and start living for yourself? Advanced registration is required and limited to the first 12 registrants. Registration includes one copy of the book, which can be picked up at Literally, A Bookshop, or at HD SOUTH (see website calendar for more information).
 
TURNING A COMIC BOOK PAGE KID’S EDITION
March 29, 2025 | 10:30am – 12:00pm   Join HD SOUTH as we welcome back local artist Russ Kazmierczak from Turning a Comic Book Page. This fun, interactive workshop will offer kids tips and tricks for creating their own original superheroes, and how to tell stories in the exciting medium of comic books! Prizes will be available for the young artists that attend. All supplies will be provided. Ages 8 to 14. Class size limited. Registration is required. Cost: FREE
