Gilbert, AZ (April 30, 2025) – HD SOUTH, Home of the Gilbert Historical Museum, is the East Valley’s arts, culture, & history center and offers a series of exciting and informative programs for people of all ages. These programs are led by artists, historians, storytellers, health and wellness specialists, botanists, and scientists; experts in their field who share their knowledge and skills with our community. WHY THE 5 C’s?
Are you familiar with the “5 C’s” of Arizona? Copper, cattle, cotton, citrus, and climate were the foundation of our state’s early economy and are all represented on the official state seal. Through June 30th, we will highlight each of the “5 C’s” of Arizona and explore how our own Gilbert history is connected to these essential elements.
FAR FROM HOME—PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT
Through June 14th in Gallery 4, experience the enlightening photography by internationally acclaimed artist Shaun McFarland. Shaun’s images of travel encompass the very essence of how being far from home changes everything. His images offer a perspective on the world and reflect an insatiable curiosity and sense of adventure. Gallery 4 admission is included in the price of museum admission.

YOGA AT HD SOUTH
June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, 2025 | 7:00pm – 8:00pm. Join HD SOUTH and Yoga’s Arc, Amilia Lucie and Alyssa Schaeffer for an hour of yoga that will help relax participants while conditioning muscles. Enjoy the benefits of effective breathing, improved flexibility, and greater balance. This is an all-level yoga class for teens through adults. Please bring a yoga mat, water, and wear comfortable clothing. Registration is required. Cost: FREE
ART OF THE IMAGINATION
June 7, 2025 | 10:30am – 12:00pm. Welcome Debra McVay M. Ed., for this unique art workshop. Children are guided through a calming visualization that encourages relaxation, imagination, and self-expression. After the guided journey, they’ll paint what they visualized, turning their inner world into meaningful artwork. Visualization helps children build focus, reduce stress, and boost creativity and imagination—all while having fun and expressing themselves through art. Ages 9—13. Registration required. Space is limited. Cost: FREE
THE MONKEES, THEN AND NOW
June 10, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm. In 1966, the world was forever changed by the debut of The Monkees! Designed to capitalize on The Beatles’ success, The Monkees was a television show about a band, but their music was so catchy, they became an ACTUAL band, and its last surviving member is on tour to this very day. Join us for an evening of fun stories and pop culture trivia, hosted by Monkees super-fan Russ Kazmierczak, Jr., Included are the many ways The Monkees’ history was influenced by Arizona. Prizes and giveaways will be available to attendees, and all ages are welcome. Registration required. Cost: FREE
AUTHOR VISIT – BOOK READING
June 14, 2025 | 10:30am – 12:00pm. You are cordially invited to the launch of the newest book DECEIVED by Whitney Award Winner, Tyson Abaroa. Tyson will read from his brand-new thriller, as well as have copies of his other books on hand for sale and to sign. There will be a special gift for all attendees and raffle prizes. DECEIVED is Tyson’s first stand-alone story. Enrique Miller had won a coveted spot at Harvard Law School, and thought he was escaping his small hometown for good! However, all that changed when the phone rang, and he learned of his father’s murder. Enrique grapples with grief as he returns to his hometown which had been shaped by his father’s towering legacy. Enrique is reluctantly drawn into the murder investigation and uncovers a dangerous pattern of deceit and betrayal and small-town secrets. Registration required. Cost: FREE
FAMILY HISTORY – TECHNOLOGY ACROSS GENERATIONS
June 17, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm. Join ASU professor emeritus Duane Roen, founding coordinator for the Project for Writing and Recording Family History in the College of Integrative Science and Arts for a unique family history workshop. Technology changes from one generation to another, and it changes rapidly within a single generation. For example, in the United States farmers were still using workhorses into the 1940s, but tractors had pretty much replaced them by the 1950s. In the home and workplace, many forms of technology have changed in our lifetime. In this workshop we will write about technologies that have changed during our lifetime and how those changes have altered our lives in ways that our parents or grandparents could not have imagined. Ages 14 & up. Registration required. Cost: FREE
STAMPED ART BIRTHDAY CARDS
June 21, 2025 | 10:30am – 12:00pm. Join stamping enthusiast Kim Quade to make two handmade birthday cards using rubber stamps, ink, and paper. All supplies will be provided, and step-by-step instructions will be given. No experience necessary. Come have some fun making cards suitable to celebrate your friends and family birthdays. Attendance limited. Ages 16 & up. Registration is required. Cost: $12 per person. Cash only. Accepted the day of the program. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to HD SOUTH.
MAKE MUSIC DAY
June 21, 2025 | 6:00pm – 8:00pm. In honor of the annual nationwide event, HD SOUTH invites you to participate in Making Music at The Museum. Music lovers are invited to perform individually or in a group to celebrate a national music collaboration. Whether you are a seasoned performer or a budding artist, this is a great opportunity to share your talent. Ages 12 and up. Registration is required; performer spots are limited. Musicians will need to bring their own equipment. Cost: FREE.
SOUND MEDITATION FOR GRIEF June 24, 2025 | 6:30pm-7:30pm. Join Stuart Preston, a certified Sound Practitioner, for a deeply empathetic Sound Meditation Session designed for those grappling with loss. It’s not about moving on but finding moments of peace and clarity amidst sorrow. Bring a yoga mat, blankets, and a pillow to create your personal sanctuary. KID’S CROSS-STITCHING
June 28, 2025 | 10:00am – 12:00pm. HD SOUTH’S volunteer Louise Kircher is teaching her famous cross-stitching class again at the museum. Stitch along with other participants to create a cross-stitched wall hanging. The stamped cross-stitched design is done on unbleached muslin. Each participant will take home their completed project. All supplies are provided. Recommended for ages 8 to 14 years. Class size limited. Registration is required. Cost: FREE
COOKIE DECORATING WITH MAE’S COOKIE JAR
June 28, 2025 | 1:00pm – 3:00pm. Whether you come on your own or with friends, you will have a great time decorating gorgeous, 4th of July themed cookie sets. Guided by the talented Vickie from Mae’s Cookie Jar, participants will learn a variety of cookie decorating techniques including how to hold the icing bags, outlining, flooding, wet on wet techniques, and more! Cookie sets are designed by 6B’s Teaching Partners and taught by Vickie. All supplies and a take-home box are provided. Ages 16 and up. Registration is required. www.maescookiejar.com/hdsouth
