Before Mom Comes Home From the Hospital: 7 Things to Have Ready
Before Mom Comes Home From the Hospital: 7 Things to Have Ready
The hospital calls and says, “Your mom may be ready to go home tomorrow.”
That is good news, but if you are also managing a business, leading a team, or juggling a full workday, it can quickly turn into a long list of questions.
Who will be there when she gets home? Has someone picked up her prescriptions? Is there food in the house? Can she safely get to the bathroom?
A little planning can make the first few days at home feel much less overwhelming.
1. Make Sure Someone Is There
The first day home can be tiring and confusing. Try to make sure a family member, friend, or caregiver is available to help your loved one settle in.
2. Pick Up Prescriptions Beforehand
Do not wait until the evening. If medications were changed, make sure someone understands what is new and when each medication should be taken.
3. Stock the Kitchen
Have simple meals, snacks, and drinks ready. The goal is to make eating easy, especially if your loved one is tired or not feeling like themselves yet.
4. Clear the Walkways
Remove clutter, loose rugs, cords, or anything that could make moving around the house more difficult.
5. Plan for Follow-Up Appointments
Before discharge, know what appointments are coming up and who will provide transportation.
6. Think About the Bathroom
Can Mom safely get to the bathroom? Does she need help with bathing, dressing, or getting up and down? These are often the things families realize only after getting home.
7. Be Honest About How Much Help the Family Can Provide
This one matters.
If everyone has work, children, travel, or other responsibilities, it is okay to admit that the family may need extra support.
A few hours of home care can help with meals, companionship, transportation, personal care, and everyday routines while giving family members some breathing room.
