Know Your Numbers: Turning Financial Statements into Better Business Decisions
Many small-business owners receive financial statements but are not confident using them to run the business.
This interactive workshop will help participants understand what their numbers are telling them and how to turn that information into practical decisions. Using straightforward explanations and real-world business examples, participants will learn how to read a profit and loss statement and balance sheet, understand the difference between profit and cash flow, calculate break-even, evaluate margins, and identify the key financial indicators they should monitor each month.
The session will combine financial education, guided exercises, audience discussion, and a practical monthly financial-review framework participants can immediately use in their businesses.

- Read and interpret the key sections of a profit and loss statement and balance sheet.
- Explain why a profitable business can still experience cash-flow problems.
- Calculate an approximate monthly break-even point.
- Evaluate gross margin and understand how pricing and direct costs affect profitability.
- Identify financial warning signs before they become larger problems.
- Select three to five key financial indicators appropriate for their business.
- Conduct a structured monthly financial review and identify specific actions based on the results
Presented By: Steve Stowe
Steve Stowe is the founder of Apex Accounting and Advisory, where he helps small-business owners improve their bookkeeping, understand their financial statements, manage cash flow, and make better business decisions. He holds a Master of Science in Accountancy and an MBA and brings approximately 20 years of commercial banking experience along with an extensive background in executive coaching, leadership development, and adult education. Steve has taught undergraduate and graduate business courses, facilitated workshops for leaders and entrepreneurs, and is known for making complex financial concepts practical, understandable, and actionable.
